My camry is havin the same issue, maybe they're related. I read up on my issue, I got something about the IAC valve:
quote:

The IAC valve controls engine idle speed by varing bypass air around the throttle body.  The valve body contains a small elelctric motor the opens and closes the valve based on computer inputs.

I dunno if this even fits your issue, but hey I tried.

When your IAC is going the problem youll get is a fluctuating idle. Usually it wont cause the car to totally stall out

What year is the camry, there might be a reflash for the pcm for idle problems.

The camry is a 94 le (if you check the thread under this one, its about the issue Im having too) I first thought it might be the computer trying to relearn after the power was disconnected, but I remembered the car is too old for a computer like that.

Yeah your right, 94 is to old, I would check the iac valve and pretty much everything related to  that.  Also make sure that the egr valve isnt sticking at idle too.

Okay, I got more power after getting rid of the blockage in the IAC valve, but Im still stalling. Normally flooring it would give me a slow increase of power, I'd floor it before stalling just to keep the rpms up. I did it this morning after cleaning the iac valve, I burned out  but even tho its got balls finally (for a camry) Its still having the issue. I'll take a look at the egr valve if I can. Would that be a cleaning job too? Time to operate again .

Sometimes if the battery is really dead, the car may not idle until the battery is charged back up some.  I've seen this happen before.  We just went thru this with one of our company trucks.  We jump it and it would die.  After doing this a few times, we decided to leave the 2 vehicle hooked up for minutes with the engine running.  This time the other vehicle started and the idle was ok.  Pearl.

Well isnt the Montero starting up fine after the first jump? I know my camry starts fine, its only after running a bit that it stalls out. and I have a new theory (unrelated to djbez): the cat converter I worked on, we installed a pipe goin right to the screen of the cat converter, Im thinkin thats screwing up the compression, building up back pressure cuz the air wont just flow out properly.
