compression test results??

newguy2007 -> compression test results?? (3/15/2008 10:02:38 AM)

alright i did my compression test. But this was the strange thing: i know when the rings are worn you have like 3 good cylinders and 1 bad one and then do the wet test and see if it comes up. I did mine and ALL the cylinders were like 150-151. They all matched. So i did the wet test anyway on one and it ended up reading 180 so it raised like 20psi.

Does it sound like my rings??

Rings, yup.

What engine is this?

i have the turbo eclipse gst. 1997 actually what is the engine in it. I know its a 2.0.

Anyway, so the rings are definatly gone even though all cylinders were the same? Also do you think this would explain my lack of boost, smoke from my car, and smoke from my vents?

standard compression on those cars is supposed to be 178psi. However the service limit on them is 133psi. So you are not at the point yet where you need to think about rebuilding the motor or anything. And since there wasnt any that were really low i dont see anything in there that says you need new rings. Also nothing points to a head gasket but usually the smoke through the vents is a head gasket issue which is what is confusing me. You could have possibly blown a head gasket on the outer part of it but i would think youd notice the leak in the engine bay.

Do you notice any loss of coolant. The problem could possibly be the turbo is shot. Take the intake off and check the small shaft in the center of the wheel for any movement in/out and left/right

Deff sounds like bad rings, it explains a lot of your symptoms.

well now im really confused. Should i change the rings or the head gasket or run it how it is ( i dont want to do that because the smoke and stalling is pissing me off) or get a leak down test??????

Like i said you are not even close to service limit on that car. Its what happens when a car gets old, you wont have perfect compression. But you dont need to change them IMHO

Yes an no,  John you have to factor in the #s may also be a little higher because of carbon build up.  Most motors when they get old read higher compression than they actually are holding because carbon.

so what about the smoke and stalling. I cant keep driving like that. I cant even use my boost and thats what i bought the car for.

I would check the turbo and make sure that is running properly. Look for shaft play
