Overboosting

ndub -> Overboosting (4/21/2008 12:01:17 PM)

I own a 1997 Eclipse RS with the 420a motor in it, and have recently decided to turbo the motor.  I've peiced together everything i need and am about to install it on my car.  Untill i just reached a problem.  First of all i should let everyone know its a used kit that came off of a built talon and he was boosting at 20psi.  He said that he wasnt using a boost controller and that the wastegate was set for 20psi.  I want to turn the boost down to around 6, but dont know if i will need to just buy a new wastegate or if im able to adjust the one i have to a lower setting.  Help would be very much appriciated.

a boost controller should controll the boost even with your waste gate. i think. and why would you spend all that money on turboing the 420a AHHHHHH. you should of just gotten a gst/gsx seriously. if you have lots of time and lots of money i guess its cool to say you have one but not very realistic

and is it a built motor, cause if it isn't yeah get a manual boost controller and drop it down quick.

EMonz57 -> RE: Overboosting (4/21/2008 1:45:02 PM)

you cant lower boost lower than the wastegate spring.  So if you have a 20lbs wastegate the lowest you can run is 20 psi.  so youll need a 5 lbs spring to run levels that low.

ya there is alot more to it then just throwing a turbo on there. if you have done your research you already know. emonz thats good to know i always wondered why i couldnt drop my boost below like 12 but when i did have my boost controller down my car bucked and wouldnt boost worth crap it was sad. it was perfect timing i had a mustang next to me not cobra or saleen and he was revving and i took off and my car was running like shi t but i still got him. so i turned the boost controller up and it was good to go

yeah.. i totally read past that wastegate part lol.

Thanks emonz your probably the only guy on here who left a real comment, no offense to anyone but man if your gonna say something at least know what your talking about. Atown your just a retard im sorry but do you understand how much that swap would cost? First of all the tranny is on the complete opposite side of the car. And a gst motor cost more than the turbo kit i bought, and one more thing a turboed 420a at 8psi is faster than a gst. So why would i do a more expensive swap?

Darknigh you sound just about as dumb, obviously you yourself must not know anything about turbo aplications cuz you said i can slap on a boost controller and turn my boost down. It doesnt work like that, boost controllers can only turn boost up. The wastegate controls what your lowest boost setting can be.

Back to the subject. Yeah Emonz I've been doing as much research as i can and thats what i was thinking i needed to do is change the spring, but ive also been talking to people who say you can do something with the actuator to adjust it, but idk how to do that.

Oh here is one more thing i should probably mention the turbo itself is an EVO VIII turbo.

I think that he ment that you should have sold your car and bought a GST/GSX to start with. You should also probobly not rag on long time members, we have a lot of respect (for the most part) for eachother around here, we are all wrong at one time or another. This site is about expanding your knowledge on cars.

Also... A 420 @ 8psi would have a hard time keeping up with a GST. That is assuming you have all the appropriate supporting mods. A lightly moded GST can get around 230hp

Congrats on the new turbo tho. Sounds like you pretty much know what you are doing. I hope that we can help you with anyother questions you might have. Good luck finding the appropriate wastegate! [:)]

EMonz57 -> RE: Overboosting (4/22/2008 4:54:39 AM)

it depends if it is a internal gate or external gate.  Just so you know the stock Evo wastegate is only on 12psi when running the wastegate pressure.  not many people ever upgrade the wastegate either untill they go for a big turbo with an external gate

atown420 -> RE: Overboosting (4/22/2008 7:22:37 AM)

ya i wasnt saying drop a 4g63 into your rs. i just think your wasting alot of money but thanks for the comment if you stick around you should get some pics up we always like to see things that have not been done very often. or atleast i do. i think i could take your 420a turbo in my gst btw [image]http://www.mitsubishiforum.com/micons/m11.gif[/image]
