My 2000 MS had the timing belt jump a tooth or two, and the result was extensive valve train damage and two pistons damaged.  The complete estimate (from a highly recommended rebuilder) is $2575 for a complete rebuild (crank refinishing, pistons, valve train, oil pump, block/head renewed, etc).  The vehicle is in great shape, otherwise, and it has 126k on it.  I was late with the second timing belt change.  The Mitsu dealer offered to buy it for $1500, or fix it for $7500.

My instinct is to go ahead with the $2575 repair, and blow my tax refund (plus some savings). 

Would you do the same?  Is there anything else I need to consider for the rebuild?

I would personally look for a used motor. Much easier.

What was the mileage on the timing belt?

If you like the truck, its been maintained well and you can handle the gas prices, Id say rebuild and make sure there is a warranty that makes sense. Sure, the guy wont warranty a rebuild 50k miles, but at least something so that you are not throwing your money away if it burns oil or lacks power within the first months of driving.

Youll end up with a truck that has a "new" motor and will last years *IF* you keep up with your maintenance!

go with a used motor. you can find plenty of them with low milage. any salvage yard is hooked up with other salvage yards all over the country and can locate one very easily. just be sure to have whoever is doing the work to put on a new t-belt before the motor gets installed. average price for a used motor will run you 800-900 bucks.

What did you decide to do?

My timing belt just broke in my 98 MS Sport. The belt had 40,000 miles on it.

I called around my area and found a couple of shops who told me they could install a used engine (with 60,000 miles or less) for around $3100.

I finally found one shop who will install a rebuilt engine for $3400. 2 year/24,000 mile warranty.

I can''t do the work myself, so those savings are not an option.

I''m going to go with the rebuild.
