4 wheel drive light flashes sometimes

i have a 96 montero LS 3.0. sometimes i notice that the lite flashes telling me that the front wheels are engaged. i try backing up (i think i read that doing this disengages the 4 wheel drive). i would park and go into a store and get back in and every thing would be ok meaning just the 2 green lites for the rear wheels on.then 2 weeks later i would get in to go to work and the fronts are flashing again. is this electrical? if so whats the fix. thanx

more than likely you have one or more 4wd shift switches that are going bad. those switches are on the top of the transfer case. that is fairly common. there is a continuity test for each switch, although i dont have that info handy, alldata.com or mitchellondemand.com will have that for you. you will have to take loose the rear trans mount and the transfer case mount and the drive shaft and lower the trans/transfer assembly to get access to the switches. good luck!!   greg....
