I have the exact same issue with mine. If I power on the stereo, the antenna raises, then the gears sound almost like they are grinding at the top. When I turn off the stereo, the antenna comes back down. Not sure if you did replace your antenna yet or not, but I've been thinking about doing it. If it worked for you, let me know. If you haven't done it, I'll let you know if it worked for me. Anyone have any good idea where I could find another antenna?

Where to buy 2001 Montero Limited power antenna mast?
I read the post, I know how to replace it, I opened the power antenna, seems the teeth of mast cable is worn out. I checked with dealer (in California, US), they want $65 for the replacement mast. I tried go online, but cannot find the any good deal. Couple of Ebay sell it for around $50. Anyone know where can I find the $12 deal?
