cleaning the carpet

what is the best way to clean the carpet...i have stuff ground in and very hard to vaccum it up. ideas?

I have a Bissell little green machine that works great. Plan B: A cleaner..diluted woolite or a dedicated carpet cleaner and a good stiff brush
