when i start the car in the morning or when it sits for several hours it makes this screeching sound for about 5 to 10 seconds. its a 99 eclipse gs. at first i thought it was the belts. so i looked at the engine as i had someone start it and it wasnt coming from the belts. somewhere in the middle of the engine by the fire wall area. what could it be?

Can you record it?  It could be a few things.  If its stick doesnt make a difference w/ the clutch depressed?

I know you said the middle of the engine but, can you pinpoint where the noise is?  it could be a pulley going bad or bearing in the alternator or something.  Your right abt it not lasting long lol.

Well try adjusting the tension and see if it makes a difference.
