shadowmancer -> weird sound on start up (7/5/2008 11:06:17 PM)

when i start the car in the morning or when it sits for several hours it makes this screeching sound for about 5 to 10 seconds. its a 99 eclipse gs. at first i thought it was the belts. so i looked at the engine as i had someone start it and it wasnt coming from the belts. somewhere in the middle of the engine by the fire wall area. what could it be?

Could be throw out bearing.

Can you record it?  It could be a few things.  If its stick doesnt make a difference w/ the clutch depressed?

I know you said the middle of the engine but, can you pinpoint where the noise is?  it could be a pulley going bad or bearing in the alternator or something.  Your right abt it not lasting long lol.

sure ill try to get in closer. hopefully without falling in lol. sometimes when i floor the car from a dead stop and get high rpms it starts making the noise also.

im guessing it might actually be the alternator belt.

Well try adjusting the tension and see if it makes a difference.
