Probably a timing chain..the new lancers have timing chains so i assume they are doing this with the whole fleet. I just spent 300 bucks changing the timing belt on my 03 lancer es today actually....

I have an 08 ES with the 4cyl engine.  I have went through the entire mitsu recommended maintnance schedule in the owners manual up to 125,000+ miles and can not find any recommendation to replace the timing belt/chain on the 4cyl MIVEC.  There is a recommendation for the 6cyl MIVEC.  Another neat feature of the 4cyl engine are the iridium tipped spark plugs that don''t need to be replaced for at least 100,000 miles.

Hey Azjake, I pretty much share your excitement in regard to the timing chain. It does not need to be replaced. My car is same config as yours.

I traded in an 03 Hyundai Elantra on my outtie.  I liked the Elantra and it had a 10 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty that included the timing belt, but get this.  In their maintanance in owners manual they recommend replacing timing belt at 60,000 miles, which costs $400 at the dealer.  Got 1,000 miles on my outtie and love it...

4 cylinder engine has a timing chain.
