I have a 93 SL model and when I accelerate I get a puff of blue-ish smoke out the exhaust. I''m guessing that the piston rings or seals are shot, is this an easy, albeit fairly labour intesive, fix? Any help or suggestions would be very welcome and appreciated

Pretty labour intensive. Easier to change the motor.

how about before you go and rebuild a motor or swap it.  you take the time to do a compression and leakdown test.  that will answer if it is really your rings ect

^^^ Thanks you, do a dry compression test and then a wet compression test to see if you problem lies in the bottom end or head.

Thats true.

It is probably only one part of one bank if it is in the head.

Start with a compression test.   If the numbers are good- don''t even bother with the wet test.   I agree that it is most likely the VSS.
