Have you checked the basics...fuel, spark, compression?

sounds like he warped the head?. or head gasket went. if it just turns over and doesnt start. that happened to my old one. well gasket broke and wrped the head. it would turn over and took about 10 min to start and it would eventually start. when u filled the radiator up is white smoke coming out the exhaust?

If he pegged the gauge and still drove it, it will most likely be a warped head as Needs suggested.  But there''s still a chance that the temp sensor is keeping it from starting (safety feature).

But there''''''''s still a chance that the temp sensor is keeping it from starting (safety feature).

When i worked for Mitsubishi, I''''ve seen failed coolant temp sensors prevent startup due to incorrect readings (on the 2.0L DOHC 420A engine)- but never as a safety feature.   The failed sensor basically tells the PCM that the engine is at sub 0 temperature resulting in an instant flooding upon startup.   This was a common problem because the upper radiator hose was a common leak source and it always leaked onto the temp sensor corroding the terminals.

Back to the original post-  start with a compression test.   I''''m certain this will expose the root of your problems.   Likely a blown headgasket and .. depending how hot it got- a warped cylinder head.   Note that the 420A cylinder head cannot be milled and will need to be replaced.
