Hi

I am about to purchase a used 2004 lancer sportback ralliart. However my biggest concern is the timing belt. At 101,000 miles, it has higher-than-average miles. Did a lot of research and found out that at 100k miles, the timing belt is due for replacement. However, the car does not come with maintenance records (sold in a dealership) although carfax shows it has been serviced regularly.

I am already considering to buy it and have the timing belt replaced. However, finding this forum, I am considering asking this question: Is it possible and cost-effective to just check the timing belt to see if it has just been replaced? Is the 4G69 an interference engine wherein timing belt breakage will be disastrous (i think though that in any case, a timing belt breakage would always be disastrous).

Any inputs is very much appreciated, and would help me make a more informed decision.

TIA

Did you ask the owner if he changed the timing belt or the dealer that you bought the car.

sometimes dealer don''t change or fix anything they sell. If it is a certified Mitsu dealer they might. No one can really tell except those people I mentioned above.

If not sure. just changed it and Why did you buy a high mileage car?
if it was 55,000 or 65,000 miles it acceptable but over 100,000 is not.

engine oil leak, tires, timingbelt issue are on the scale for a 100,000 miles. if is just body repair that won''t be a problem but engine is a big problem for 100,000 miles plus car

buy a new car that will fit your budget with great credit score you can buy a Lancer 2008 with down payment of 1,500 or 2,000 and a monthly payment of $250.00 a month if you have an excellent credit history.

think about before purchasing a used car with high mileage and suffer the consequences 6 months or less. because car sickness usually comes out after you bought the car.

and I hope it is a manual

Hi BEAT
thanks for the advice. We have not bought the car yet and actually what''s happening right now is banks have second thought of financing it because of the high miles. My credit is rated rated as good and they actually said that had the miles been just average (i.e. 15k miles per year) the financing would be approved.

So I guess I will keep on looking. And i am actually thinking one-year old cars with average miles and active warranties would be the best deal.

thanks again...

see even the bank is reluctant to pay for the car BUT YOU ARE APPROVED it means just got a newer car. thats your best bet

get around 6 to 7 interest rate. good luck

the bank and dealer loves selling new cars than the older ones. just remember do not go over 300 a month for payment at least 280 or 260 but not over 300.
