I want to buy a eclipse gst or gsx, but Ive heard from a few people that your stock version of these cars is quite horrible. Ive heard that the stock transmission is bad and that everything in the engine is just horrible. I talked to a mechanic and he recommended a subaru over this car because of how often hes seen them in his shop for repair. Can anyone shine some light on this matter.

its all about maintenance. If the car is maintained there wont be problems like that. The stock tranny''s are fine, its bad driving from people that break them. The problem with these cars is that alot of the times they are owned by kids that beat the **** out of them creating all these problems. But if you find a low mileage 2g and take care of it you wont have many problems

TE is right, it''s not the car that gives the owner issues, it''s the owner that creates issues for the car.
Your mechanic is correct in saying that he sees them in their states.  It''s because they are beat to ****!
Subarus are beat to **** too.  He doesn''t see as many of them because Subaru recommends "qualified" mechanics and not "general" mechanics.  The moral of the story is...don''t listen to everything people tell you, especially when they don''t have all the facts or just don''t give it.

DSMs are reliable if the HP is kept at or below 350-ish.  Anything over that and you''ve got to expect something OEM to break.  That''s the whole reason for aftermarket parts.
