leaky valve cover gasket maybe, mine is leaking and it''s sprayed oil all over the engine bay, some oil got into a spark plug and it wouldn''t enter boost, everytime it got past the vacuum it would stutter like a mofo, cleaned it up, replaced wires and plugs, ran fine.  so definately clean it up, check your gasket.

A valve cover with a pool of oil sitting where the plugs/wires or on top of the valve cover itself could mean that you have a leaking oil cap.  Oil in the plug area means that the plug seals need to be changed.
Backfire is normal for a car without a cat and with a high flow muffler or straight pipe.  The cat usually catches those and the muffler usually, well, it muffles it.

Google "boost leak test" and "boost leak tester" or search it in here.  I posted a link to a post of mine from another board showing a whole strew of boost leak testers some time ago.

Well, since the board is allowing me to post in my regular manner again I was able to create my boost leak tester post from another board.  It''s in the Eclipse FAQ section, so, here it is.
