You need to find out whether your setup uses mechanical speedo or electronic one. Most of the modern cars use electronic type, which is a little attachment (called sender) that has a gear mechanically connecting inside the gearbox and two/three wires going out to the speedo in the instrument cluster. Check for any hanging free connectors under your car around the gearbox.
It could be a broken sender too.
