They're right, valve tick is probably the cause.  Need an oil change?  Even if you don't, go ahead and do one.  Use a lighter weight oil and see if that temporarily cures the problem.  Use maybe a 5w weight.  Valve tick, or lifter tick, isn't uncommon on mitsu's, and it's not a serious problem either.  Just really annoying.

Well, i wouldn't waste money on synthetic oils.  The only thing synthetic can do is prolong the life of the oils, or in other words let you go longer without doing an oil change.  Generally you do an oil change about 3000 miles, using synthetic you can do one every 5000 miles.  I just think it's better to do oil changes frequently using fossil than to spend more money on synthetic and go longer without and oil change.  My preference though, choose which ever you like!

If you really have time and know what you're doing I would recommend either cleaning the lifters when off of the car or replacing them with new ones.  They're hydraulic so you will have to be careful when cleaning, but the result will be worth it.
