Oil on my plugs

nimby -> Oil on my plugs (4/19/2004 2:17:42 PM)

I actually have a '95 Talon (don't diss it, it's got a mitsu 2.0L in it), but recently it started running like crap, and I pulled the plugs, and wires to change them and found a bunch of oil sitting around each one.  I changed the valvle cover gasket, and the little gaskets around each plug(these came with the new valve cover gasket).  This didn't really change much.  I drove it around for about 10 minutes and the new plugs already have oil around them.  Is the oil coming past the plugs?  If that were the case then why would all of them have a little oil.  #4 has a lot of bad looking oil, nearly sludge.  What is burnt up in my motor?  If anyone knows please give me an ideas you may have.

I recently replaced the spark plugs in my 2.2L engine and found the outside of one of the plugs covered in motor oil which accumulated in the access hole. All 3 other plugs and holes were spotless. Is there a sela which I can replace to stop the leak? Is it a big job or does it just involve removing the valve cover to get to the seal?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, there is a spark plug hole gasket that needs to be replaced. Might as well replace all four gaskets and yes you have to remove valve cover to replace.

Thanks, but I have already done that, and I still get oil on top of each plug.  I think there may be something wrong with a blow-by sensor(or similar part), becuase I think this accumulation is a little too much for it.

Nimby,

Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I had the same situation happen to my eclipse, same engine. Replaced the valve cover gasket and plug seals. Few months later when I was tunning up I found plugs drenched in oil. I took it to the shop and they told me it was the head gasket which needed to be replaced.

I don't necessarily want to pay 500 to replace the head gasket unless I know for sure.

hey , not to scare you or anything  , same thing was happening to me with my original motor ,ended up being a bad head , lets just hope it aint that on yours. if your valve cover gaskets are good , then it might be smtg more serious.
