03 Montero-Sloshing/Liquid sound on acceleration

Hello all-

My Montero makes this funny sloshing/liquid sound on acceleration from a stop. What the heck is it? Any ideas? It's coming from the center dash, kind of where the climate controls are.

Thanks!
Jack

Sounds like you are low on coolant.

That is EXACTLY the case. The current generation Montero and Montero Sport are both a little tricky to burp when performing a cooling system service. If all of the air hasn't been properly burped out, it will make a sloshing sound when the engine is revved after idleing for a few seconds. If you didn't have a recent service, have it checked out as you may be leaking coolant somewhere. If you have had a recent service, take it back and have them purge the air out of the system properly.

What about water in the heater ducts? Is the carpet on the drivers side wet? I had a problem with mine, in that a little debris woudl clog the drain hole for the heater vents and so rain water would collect and slosh around. The drain holl can be cleared from underneath the car.

Thanks for the advice! I'll check both the ventilation drain and the coolant level and let you know what it was.

Ok, it turns out there was air in the cooling system, so I bled it with the 2 bolts that are on both large coolant hoses. Iit was also a little low on coolant (about 1 quart or so), so I added a 50/50 mix of long life coolant and distilled water and it's fine.

Wow, I am having the same described problem with the better half's 2002 XLS.  Since it is at 59765 miles I was about to change the coolant and hopefully this problem will go away!  Thanks for the info, Joel.

I know I'm late on this, but I'v e had that same thing. Can anyone go into more detail about burping the system please.  Two bolts? what else do you do?

tj90 -> RE: 03 Montero-Sloshing/Liquid sound on acceleration (4/8/2008 11:19:48 AM)

Its real simple. There is a bleeder bolt on top of the motor as part of the aluminum housing that connects the cooling line to the motor. Remove bolt and just add 50/50 fluid until coolant leaks out the bolt. Tighten bolt and your done. Of course, if you have signifcant mileage and age on the fluid, go ahead and flush the system and start with fresh coolant! I do mine every 2 years regardless of mileage.

Wow, thanks. And flushing the system simply means letting it all drain out and refilling.  not really flushed with water though.
