Spyder -> Timing belt (5/9/2004 9:19:22 PM)

Hello everyone. I need to get the timing belt done for my sister's 2001 Montero. Does anyone know a good place to go in Atlanta besides a dealer? I think $600 for timing belt without water pump is ridiculous, plus another $500 for 60K is just absurd. Any recommendations would be very very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Atlanta huh?  well, i live in ohio so i'm no help.  However, our family mechanic came and did my sisters t-belt at our house for $100.  Having your own mechanic will save you a ton of money, and most of the people that work at dealerships are more than happy to do side jobs since they get 100% of the profits.  Our guy  comes and works on our cars on the weekends.  He usually takes my daddy's lex gs400 into the dealer's shop to work on it, they never have a problem with him doing that.  He's great, we never have any problems with his work.  Taking a car to a shop o have them change it(even a small shop) will cost way more than you'd want to pay.  Just talk to people, a lot of them have a guy they trust to do the hard stuff on their cars.  Always get someone that's older though and works at a dealership, they have more resources and better experience.  This is a totally way off answer to your question, but hey, it's and idea.

Thanks SpyderGS.  I actually know a mechanic that used to work at Mitsubishi.  He just doesn't have the time to do it since they exploit him at the Lexus dealer.  I'll look around and see if I find someone else.  Thanks.

who ever you have do that belt make sure they kno what there doing ..I had to do many of head replacements due to bent valves .....People who don't understand how that tensioner works can wreck you engine ...it's not there just to tighten the belt ..Imperative it is set correctly
