dswa5 -> wet carpet on the driver's side (1/30/2006 12:28:59 PM)

I think I saw someone post some information on what to do when water gets in on the driver's side floor when it rains. Any insight on what I can do to prevent this from happen again. (2003 Mitsubishi Monterro Sport LS)

In Gen I's, It usually leaks through your windshield gasket or possibly from the hoses going to your heater core. Does the water smell like coolant at all? If it does then it will be those hoses. if not, then it's probably the windshield gasket.

It doesn't smell like coolant, so what do you recommend to fix the windshield gasket?

Maybe... assuming you've exhausted all other possible areas where it could be leaking. For example, it could be coming from a sun roof, door leak, etc.

Also, I'm not an expert on your model so I can only say what I know about my model montero (1990 4 door v6)

When it rains, water tends to get in on the driver's side on the floor.

From your description thus far, it sounds like a new windshield gasket is needed.

Not sure how well this will work but seems logical that it will.... others may have other idea's as well.
(note: it's no guarantee that it will work but if you do see water inside when doing this, it will help you isolate where the problem is.)

1) Dry it all out... Fully.

Remove as much of the carpet from the side that get's wet as you can (means removing the front seat, some trim panels, etc. on that side)...

Make sure the floor's dry.

Close the door, and have a friend spray water on the car in one spot for a few minutes and check for water inside.

If you don't see any water after a few minutes of spraying, do it again in another spot for a few minutes. You need to do it for a few minutes at each spot because it may take some time for it to leak in and flow to the floor where you'll be able to see it.

HTH.
