Hey everyone,

Im looking at buying a 1995 Eclipse and I just took it for a test drive today. While driving me and my dad encounter something that we where pretty damn sure is not normal.

You cant shift into first gear (yes its a stick) while the car is in motion or if the engine is reved up in neutral with the clutch in. Now it down-shifts and shifts into all other gears perfect. My dad said that its the syncro for the 1st gear thats probably bad.

When we took it back to the dealership the guy there said that some cars dont have a syncro for first gear at all. Is this true, or he just trying to make a sale? Any help would be awsome, thanks alot.

Brandon

does the clutch feel good, Like its not burnt out. I remember my car used to grind going down into first but that was just a safety at higher speeds so that you wouldn't acidentally down shift to it going to fast. But jsut sitting there reving up the engine w/ the clutch in has me stumped

Yeah I called my local Mitsubishi Dealership today and explained to one of there mechanics what was happening, he said that its definitly a broken syncro on the first gear. So that solves that problem. Thanks for your help guys.

one way to see if the tranny is shifting as easily as i should be is to see if you can downshift into first while going about 20mph. if it cant thats a problem
