Drum Brake Removal

Thirdorb -> Drum Brake Removal (2/11/2006 5:50:56 PM)

Ok, I feel like a moron becuase I can't get my drums off the back of my '01 Eclipse. The manual says I can thread some bolts into the pilot holes on the drum to pop them off, BUT, they didn't specify what size bolt is needed to do this. Anyone know what size bolt/thread it is, or any other ideas for removal? YES, I made sure my e-brake was down.

I don't know the size of the bolt, you can also try and hitting the drum with a hammer towards the edge. The drum gets a lip on it which makes it difficult to get past the shoes. Just keep hitting it in a circular pattern.

Yeah I had to beat mine for a little while to get them off. Just keep working it with a Rubber Sludge hammer and it will eventually give

Yeah, I banged on it with a rubber hammer for a good while, but I didn't notice any progress. Perhaps I'll just keep whacking away....And any other suggestions would be appreciated

Dude there are 2 holes near the center of the drum. All you have to do is get a bucket'o'bolts get 2 that fit there and start cranking down. Remember to keep them going evenly. It'll be MUCH easier to do it this way vice trying to beat it off.

Yeah, I'm already aware of the holes...the problem is I don't have a bucket of bolts...that's why I am trying to figure out what size bolt is needed for the drum.

Just go to a regular hardware store that sells bolts in singles and buy 1 of each size in the general range of the size you need (They're like what 10 or 20 cents a piece) then when you find the right size buy another of that size.

Just about any bolt with a 12mm head from your vehicle will work. Try borrowing one from a bracket or mount somewhere in the engine. I'm guessing its a 8X1.25 or 10x1.25.
