it controls spark timing and injector timing (a simplified explination, but it should do).
they do a few other things, also.

I own a 1995 Galant 2.4  manufactured 7/94. I was told that my crank sensor had failed due to a no spark condition. I purchased the Crank Position Sensor and labored removing the PS, AC, and Alt belts and their mounts. Once I managed to get the Crank Pulley Off, the space where the C.P.S is supposed to be isn't there. Not even the bolts. I refered to Chilton's(waste of money book) to see where the CPS was located and it told me that it was where it was supposed to be. I have no idea where it is. I called Mitsu Motors and they tell me the same that Chiltons does. I have the book and the picture sows where it is but I dont see it. It is supposed to be located behind the crank wheel and needs to be bolted off....A little help please

I was told by the auto parts store that it had one. If it doesn't have a crank sensor, what would i need to check to find out why I dont have a spark? I thought all 4g64 had crank sensors? Is there a web site I can visit that you know where i can check up on it using my vin and year of assembly

no, up until 94 or 95 most only had a distributor (which included the crank sensor.  it was known as the "top dead center" sensor at the time.), which is the most common failure on that year galant.
