I just got a 91 tsi AWD AUTOMATIC. It is at the shop to be inspected and have a tranny service tomorrow. I went to test drive it for the first time and it acts like it is in 3 or 4th gear. Like it has to get up to about 2k+ before it will move and it NEVER shifts and i got it up to 70. At 70mph it was at 4,400rpm. Also until it gets to 40mph it just sticks at 3000. What is going on? it has 120,000ish miles

It might be the tcu stuck in limp mode. So when that happens I think it only has 3rd gear and reverse. I am not 100%sure, someone correct me if I am wrong.

I really dont know alot abt the tcu's in these cars. If you found one try swapping it to see if it works or not. You could look on ebay for one or go to a local junkyard.

Do you know anyone w/ an auto dsm, see if you could borrow their tcu or something. Deffinatly sounds like a tcu since your stuck at 3000rpms. I also remember hearing that sometimes the shift solenoids get stuck, causing the tranny not to shift. Just an idea.
