Hello all you wonderful people! I have a 93 Diamante ES with a 6g72 ECI Multi 3000 (dont know how to tell if its DOHC or SOHC - all this is new to me). My problem is a loud knock from engine area that sounds like it increases in speed with acceleration. I have had some valve work done prior to this knocking noise - to the tune of $1,300 (was loosing power if i remember correctly) My BF took it to Precision Tune - also prior to knocking sound - and they suggested a carbon cleaning - $900. He declined. Well here it sits in the driveway. for 2 years. gets an occasional bath. I want it back. Have researched and my head feels like a sponge. Please advise. Thanks so much in advance

I believe those had the SOHC. I may be wrong. As far as the noise, idk if its loud then its sounds like your car is misfiring.

quote:

if your hearing a knock in the motor if a tinny knock and if Rev it gets worse (mine speeds up with rev) its most likely a piston hitting the head , if like a broke cam car can still run(mine still runs but doesnt idle well), but if its a solid knock, or carbon knock like a spun bearing is a tinny loud knock sounds like a hammer trying to come out you need a motor major motor work, also a piston hitting sometimes sounds like steel marbles hitting in the motor , you can at a idle un plug one spark plug wire at a time and if noise stops's on one of the its defiantly the lower end,
but also the lower end can also damage the top end as well and in this case you will find out when the motor is taken apart

also, wishful thinking..ha ha - (I've read that carbon knock can sometimes sound like a rod about to go?), I'm not sure what he's saying in bold...

I'm new to the site, but hope you still are on it. Could be that you have a cracked flex-plate. That's the piece on the back of the crankshaft that your torque converter bolts to. It's not uncommon at all but is kind of pricey to pay someone else to fix. The tranny has to be removed for the repair. You can look yourself by removing the dust cover from the tranny and take a very bright light so you can see it. Get someone to rotate the engine by hand and you should be able to see any cracks in it.
