I'm thinking to buy a new heatunit for my 2001 eclipse spyder, but the guys at bestbuy told me that I had to by pass the amps that come with my car or I wont get any sound in my speaker?.. any of you know whats up with that?? do I really need to by pass the amp?

My Escalade was the same way in order to upgrade your system you had to upgrade it all. It has to do with the factory system as a whole, When they build a car at the factory the stereo system is usually the cheapest piece of s*#% they can find to keep costs low so when you go to upgrade your system you find out that none of your stock system wants to play nicely with any aftermarket equipment, My advice to you is, if your going to upgrade your headdeck you might as well upgrade your amps,speakers and wiring! If you only have the money to upgrade your deck right now I would maybe hold off until you have enough to upgrade speakers as well. Garunteed if you run an aftermarket head unit on factory speakers you'll smoke"em in a matter of days!! Just a piece of advise, don't buy your car audio equipment from a store you can buy a washer and dryer at!!!! What kind of equipment did you have in mind?????

umm crap, do you think $600 is enough to upgrade everything?? I thought the infinity system came with my spyder were pretty good sound system..I guess I'm wrong...
I was gonna goto Cartoys get JVC Arsenal KD-AR3000, cuz it got like aux in and pretty good sound.. but I dont think I can afford that plus speakers , amp, wiring under $600.. if you guys got any idea how much it would cost me? or what kinda upgrade should I get?? I just need Aux in , MP3/WMA/Satellite radio. multi channel amps.. and good speakers... and if it under $600 it would be COOL... else I guess I need save my money for another 2 months...

Hey PUFFY, what kind of music are you in to and what kind of sound quality are you looking for? (deep heavy bass, all around sound, clear highs and mids?) you say you just bought a spyder right? how much room does that drop top give you to play with in the trunk, (sub box,amps if even interested). What size speakers does your car hold 6.5 0r 5.5, or you looking to upgrade to mids-tweet with cross over for the front with just using a filler speaker for the back or what?? The one good thing about upgrading your car audio is that there is alot out there to choose from that fits everybodies income level, you just have to determine what it is your looking for out of your system(power,sound,looks)

I really want get something like all around, high quality, clear sound (nuffin like top the line sound system, but decent so I can jam to), and it doesnt skip my mp3 or regular cds, and maybe I can hook my laptop, ipod into it.., and I pretty much into all kind of musics.. I'll play whateva I'm in the mood for..maybe not much heavy bass cuz my gf doesnt like that...
as how much space I got in my car, I really dont know, its all stock now.. I probably got a small place for sub and amps (would be cool to have both) ..as I only got $600 (maybe $800 in 2 months) , so If i can get something good and got a kick into it..

I got a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS. I'm thinking about upgrading the system in the car..but I got couple quesitions.. 1: whats the difference between Component Speaker system and regular systems? 2. if I got a component speaker system for front door, do I need another set for the rear seat side panel? okay, now the systems I'm thinking to get. please tell me what you guys think or gimme some suggestions...

HeadUnit : JVC Arsenal KD-AR3000 (something under $300 that got Aux in/WMA/MP3/CD/Satellite Radio)
Amp: Sony XM-4060GTX (something thats 4 channel and around $200)
Speakers : Front Door , Alpine Type-S SPS171A or 176A or 177A (dont know which one is better, but under $200)... Rear Seat Side Panel: Infinity Reference 9602i (its only $90.. is this paired or do I need buy 2 of this? same with the Front Door ones, do I need buy 2, or is it already paired?)
and Now do I still need a sub? if I do, what kinda sub should I get.. I dont want spend too much maybe under $100 for a decent sub....and with all the wiring and installation, I figured it gonna cost me $800 (without sub, and the speakers are paired for the price) which is just about my budget...

the difference is that a component system is seperate mid range and tweeter that usually comes w/ a crossover the advantage of this is that you can customize the projection and signal range of the components better. rather than the standard speaker that has a fixed freq range and projection angle. some standard 2 or 3 way speakers have swivel tweeter but still don't allow alot of freq customization. the disadvantage of the component set is the obvious price difference and sometimes limited space (often require custom fabbing)
in order to get a sub into your budget you would be looking at some really cheap equipment that would definitely not meet the sound quality of the rest of your proposed components. even 1x 10-12" with enclosure and minimal amp is going to run $150-200.
even in a sound quality system subs are a must. midrange speakers (4"-6 1/2") have a freq. response no lower than 1000Hz and most of your bass is going to be 50-500Hz. I have had good luck w/ standard 2 or 3 way mids and they are considerably cheaper. that may free up your budget enought to get a sub and amp in there as well. One good 10 or 12" w/ enough amp to push it properly won't blow the doors off but will sound good. hope this helps.

Just out of curiosity, why would component speakers require custom fabbing? Wouldn't you be replacing the same Infinity speaker components that are already stock with the same sized components or is something different?

I'm looking to have my Pioneer head unit, with AUX in, installed soon when I get my alarm and remote start done. After reading this it's clear I'm not going to be able to use the factory amp and as far as speakers go I already have Alpine 6x9's that I took out of my other car. I'm going to get the Alpine Type-S 171A or 176A depending on which sound I prefer. I'm skipping out on the sub for right now but I'm concerned with the fabbing because I intended to take my car to Circuit City and now I wonder if they would be able to put in what I want without much effort.

It's obviously not impossible to upgrade and I don't want to have some national chain of stores like Circuit City telling me what I can and can't do or ripping me off regarding something I didn't expect.
Is there anything I should watch out for regarding installation?
And please elaborate on the fabbing or any other things that may arise.
