transmission 02 montero spt - 7/16/2006 1:18:16 AM    Roverguy   Posts: 3 Joined: 7/16/2006 Status: offline My wife's montero has decided it prefers 2nd gear. The "N" indicator light flashs and the trans will not respond to manual selection of the gear shift, (unless, of course, I choose other than foward), the check engine light is also on, I haven't hade a chance to get the stored codes retrieved yet. Have you changed your tranny fluid recently? The N light will flash and the "check engine light will come on. The dealer has had it several times, but to no avail. If I stop and let it cool off it is ok for a little while, but once the check engine light is on, it has to be reset. I started a message on here myself about this several months ago. They diagnosed a bad "fail safe switch" as the problem. Three days later, when the switch arrived, all seems well.
