i was wondering, for the first time, i had taken my eclipse on the highway, and drove it pretty fast, in first gear i had tried to take it as fast as i could, and the rpms went up pretty high until it kicked it back. actually the rpm had only gone in the #6, which is the beginning of red zone. Should an eclipse kick it back like that, is it some sort of safety thing? i never race, nor would i, and it may have been stupid to do -thanks in advance - Lorin 2003 eclipse

you hit what is called a Rev Limiter. All cars have them. Each type of car has a different Rev limit. Yours is probablty around 6500 or something. Its not bad to do it once, but its not something your supposed to do. In the future just keep the rpms under or at the red line

just shift riiiight before it and youl be fine...personally... i love the sound of engines bouncing off the rev limiter.. i would build a race motor to handle it and do it all the time

LOL i love the sound of bouncing off rev limiters... yes lol. I saw some guy with a built up AE86 at a cruise doing a burnout just holding it at the rev limiter for a long time... sounded awesome. Yes... i love the sound of it

why do that to a car? im no brain scientist but that in general cant be a good thing for a car. the block and that aluminum head will take a beating but not if your doing that all the time and for anyone to think that its ok, is really dumb!

now on the other hand if you have money to blow to build big motors and hear them blow up down the road, more power to ya!

redline is just the mechanical limits of the valves and when they start " floating"

I honestly cant believe people are asking if they can safely run the car past its redline.

why not ask if its alright to bash the car into a brick wall? the answer is obvious.
