Hello,

I was looking to buy something lower maintenance (timing belt, for example) but am considering another DSM.

I got a 90 Eagle Talon STD that appeared to be neglected, it developed a burnt valve at 205k mi, A/C Clutch at about 255k mi, and now transmission seems to be going at 268k mi. This seems better than some cars, though! Especially considering it was not taken care of.

After buying it at 123k mi, the auto transmission shuddered because of worn trans fluid for a while, and the radiator appeared to have chocolate pudding in it. Got it running okay to 170k mi when ECU went out, I was too broke to play around with expensive guesswork then.

Also, top radiator hookup broke off at about 185k mi and AGAIN around 230k mi. I wondered if this was related to the neglected radiator/cooling system.

I guess other things weren't really major.

Anyone had similar experiences?

I'm considering maybe an Eclipse 98 GS Turbo, anyone know what to expect out of that? Have ECUs improved? Is burnt valve common? Heard RS has Chrysler engine, should I stick with Mitsu engine?

I would get a 1990-1992 eclipse gsx. Those were the best built eclipses. And since you already have a 1g it wont be much of a change. If you do get a 2g then get the turbo model which came with the mitsu engine. The rs and gs came with a chrysler 420a motor which is non-turbo

My friend has a 1990 Talon AWD manual trans with 167k on the car and engine but engine was rebuilt at 100k. Needs some minor work like head gasket.. email me at nitrousjunkie101@aol.com if you wanna know more.

Thanks for the info.

The turbo is what I was hoping for, it sounds entertaining. Does anyone know of common problems with 98 automatic turbo Eclipse? It's not AWD, or at least the one available isn't.

Hmm, I was reading that the older ones are more durable.

I wouldn't be racing or pushing it especially hard, it's just to drive. I figure the turbo will pass people better, and possibly the mitsubishi engine build might be better than the Chrysler (I don't know. I knew someone with a Neon and they sounded like it might be having trouble).

I figure I might try to have my 90 Talon transmission fixed, but should get another car first since my 90 seems to be having trouble too often. The engine seems to be alright, but I guess some other things are wearing out.

the one big problem that 2g's can run into is called crankwalk. Its a factory defect that im not going to try and exlpain but search on here and youll find all about it. Something to keep in mind. Thats basically why i was saying to get a turbo 1g instead of a 2g, but if its in good shape and you take care of it you shouldnt have a problem

I heard the automatic wasn't bad for crankwalk, or that it was pretty much non-existant in automatics.

Actually I'm starting to doubt this one because he has the original timing/balance belt on a turbo at 85k mi! I'm afraid to test drive it! I'm afraid it'll gear down and finish those belts off.

Maybe he could sign a waiver or something.

Supposedly it hasn't been pushed hard (I don't see how it could have been- I read about turbo belts breaking before 60k or shortly after), but I don't understand why someone would risk $1500+ to save probably $500-.

One Mitsubishi place apperantly changes tensioner and everything- no option. I guess they don't want to risk any trouble.

I was getting fired up for this after moping over blah Hondas and Toyotas. I've always liked the 95-99 Eclipse look. Sounds like a 98 Turbo Eclipse will incinerate a 99 Solara 6 cylinder.

There's actually a 1g Talon AWD nearby, haven't checked it up close. Wanted something newer, but maybe that one's a bargain if it has decent miles.

Thanks, but I was going to go with the automatics; not familiar with manual. Also I have a very short travel range right now.

what does having a short travel range have to do with it. IMO manual is much better and i think its worth learning how to use. Once you have it you'll never want to go back. But i guess its all personal preference

And sebba does your friend live in england also because i think it will be hard to sell to someone over here
