I have a 2003 montero sport. I'm on vacation and the oil light comes on and the engine is knocking. Oil level is fine. It's not smoking. Should I drive it home about 350 miles before I put it in the shop?

if it was a spun bearing, you would notice a difference in the driving... no?

It has 66K on it. Nver had the timiing belt changed. The sound is more of a tapping than knocking, now that you mentioned it. It drives fine.

Could be lifter tick or something like that. How offen have you changed your oil? What oil do you use? Have you ever tried to use an oil additive?

I change the oil every 3-4K miles. I use 5w-30 weight oil. I haven't tried an additive. What type of additive?

but sebba lifter tick doesnt really explain why the oil light came on, it shouldnt do it just for that. Is the light on constantly?
