the 4g63's are pushin close to the same HP as the 6g72's when it comes to forced induction so keep that in mind. also its easier to do an evo swap if you just get a gs eclipse. the turbo kit for the 6g72 runs about $5,000 plus install and tuning. the kit for the 4g63 is much less expensive. P.S. do not get an RS model.

Do you read the thread before you post? he is looking for a daily driver untill he can find a gsx, why waste money with a fwd when you can afford to go awd.

The 3g's have a 4g64, the "evo" swap is a 4g63, the only difference between the gs and rs are factory options like sounds systems, leather/cloth, fog lights, rims, spoiler, ect. , you a'ight?

I'm trying to buy a 2000-2002 Eclipse GT, I'm mostly only familliar with 3000gt's what should i look for when purchasing the car? are there any recalls? Thanks

Also I have a 95 vr-4 for sale.

The rear cam plug tend to leak at the front cylinder head and it's a PITA to replace the O ring as it requires removal of the entire Tstat housing and associated piping just to remove the plug. If it's not leaking now, it's GONNA leak as this is a major leak source of the 24v 6G72 in the Galant, Montero Sport, and even the 6G74 of the Montero. Only recently did Mitsu release an update O ring to prevent reoccurance.
Stay away from the 40/50 series automatic trans in the V6 as i've seen quite a few of them implode. They implode in both the Eclipse and Galant V6. There was a Tech Talk article issued my Mitsu just before i left the company regarding a wave washer or thrust washer breaking and f'ing up the transmission front pump, etc. Again.. i've disassembled quite a few of these transmissions and found that to be very true. Even preventative maintenance won't prevent that type of failure from happening. Manual is the way to go on this one though i've seen the factory clutch burn up in 5K miles or less. I'm not sure if it has to do with the pull type clutch that the 3G V6 is using, but they won't take much abuse.
Side Airbags are a problem- though theres a TSB you can refer too should something happen. This is NOT a recall so you are limited to the SRS warranty or perhaps even a Mitsu goodwill if you've aready exceeded it.
Water leaks. The early 3G Eclipse have a tendency to leak water into the cabin. The most common area of leakage is along the body area near the door hinges where the wiring harness enters the vehicle.... pain in the ass! I've replace several carpets and amplifiers due to cars being filled with inches of water! There also a TSB involving replacement of the side view mirror seals which can also leak water.
That's all i can remember from my days as a Mitsu tech.. Fun cars, but the earlier models had their share of problems...

Good Luck with your decision!

Joel, CA

the rs has rear drum breaks, no rearswaybar. the gs has everything the gt has except the v6.

Thanks for the help, I bought a 2001 red Eclipse GT with 46,000 miles on it. It's nice and clean and no problems that I am aware of.
