Although yours may be a DOHC engine, it's probably somewhat similar to my SOHC engine.

Based on mine, you'll essentially need to remove everything from the front of the engine (Fan shroud, AC, Alternator, Steering Pump, Fan etc.).

While you're at it, you should also consider replacing your water pump, possibly your front seal, your idler pulley, etc. as these items will be accessable when doing this job.

It may also make it easier if you remove your radiator so you have better access to the front of your engine. If so, you may want to have it "rodded" as a preventative measure. Let me know if you want to know how to check it to see if it needs to be rodded.

HTH.

Are you talking about the serpentine belt that goes to the alternator, PS pump, etc? Or are you talking about the timing belt.

Good catch Winston. Sorry for any confussion but I'm refering to a Timing belt change in my process description. Happened because I was doing multiple things while responding.

Let me guess for the serpentine belt you'll need to loosen a bolt and swing an alternator, ac compressor, etc. in such a was that you relieve pressure on the belt and then simply remove it?

If it has the tensioner like my '03, you will need a 1/2" socket to "unload" the tensioner and an allen key or a nail to put in the little hole to keep the tensioner "cocked". Beyond that, I am not sure if it will be necessary to remove the fan shroud to get the belt off. My FSM does not mention the removal of the shroud to changeout the belt.

I see what you're talking about. But the tensioner on the top is for 1 of the 2 flat belts that is still in good shape. There are 3 belts. 1 V & 2 flat. The 1st flat belt is for the steering pump and the 2nd flat belt flat belt (alternator) is the one that is worn. I don't see a tensioner for that 2nd belt.

Once you are in there changing belts, I would change all three. If there is no tensioner for the Alternator belt there is probably a slotted bracket for the alternator that allows you to adjust the tension. You will need to loosen both bolts on the alternator in order to loosen the belt.

I don't mean to thread jack but this is related and I thought I'd post here before making a new thread... I've replaced my AC belt (00 3.0L Montero Sport) and there is a bit of slack I need to take out, but I can't figure out how the tensioner works. Any tips? Thanks!
