mucolk -> Transmission problem (8/11/2006 7:51:21 AM)

Hi All
I got a 2001 montero(triptronic transmission). when I start the vehicle in the mornings the forward gears wont engage till the engine heat is significantly high. So normally I have to switch on the vehicle and stay about 30 mintues before going any where[:'(]. any thoughts on whats wrong with this.
Thanks
Mucolk

have you checked the fluid level at least?

While checking the level also check how it looks. If you put a dime sized drop on your hand, it should be fairly clear not murky/cloudy. If it is murky don't just add fluid, also have it flushed. Alternately, the tranny may need rebuilding but mitsu auto trannys are pretty rock solid if you take care of them. I frequently hear of them lasting 200k+ miles w/out any rebuilds, just fluid changes.

yes I did change the oil frequently.

what will it cost me to rebuild the transmission if there is no alternative.

I had the same exact problem this past week and this morning was really cold. It took almost 5 seconds for the forward gear to engage, almost got t-boned because it would not kick into gear. i checked my fluid levels and they are fine. What did you end up doing about your problem.
