Fixing to buy my first mitsubishi....(been driving hondas[:'(]) Na...I still like 'em just ready for something different. Anyway...looking at a GSX. If I get an after market turbo was wondering what else I would need to upgrade and what controller would work good with it. [;)]ANY info. would be helpful. OH...Also how strong are the stock internals on one?

You have a lot to do before you buy a turbo. You should get a blow off valve, intake, boost controller, clutch, maybe upgrade the tranny, and probably a engine rebuild depending on the miles. You will also want exhaust(porting, downpipe, and catback, and a new manifold) , a boost controller and a turbo xs are cheap and can hold the boost, a fuel pump, and intercooler pipes, will probably be needed. What year are you looking for, if it's a 1st gen the stock internals are very strong and are not known for crankwalk. But the 2nd gens are known for this, especially 97's, but mines at 120,000 mi and I have not seen any sines of it on my car. If the person took care of the car it shouldn't have it mainly its like changing the oil and also how they drove, but I have heard of people that have babied there cars and still ended up with it though. But every thing else is very good in the engine.

Looking at getting a 2nd generation GSX or GST. I've heard this crank walk before, what is it exactly?

When the crank shaft moves side to side.

Forgot to say, its due to the from the crankshaft putting to much pressure on the thrust bearings and the movement causes the bearings to wear and break down. Hope that answers it.

Thanks...I Figured it was close to what the name calls it. I had another question......I'm planning on right from the start installing a better complete exhaust system (manifold with waste gate pipe, no cat, muffler, all 3inch pipe) I'll be upgrading the fuel system and intake manifold as well.
When I replace the exhaust manifold with one that has the external waste gate piping, what turbo would some of you recommend I get? I've been looking and found these turbos with the waste gate inside. So where can I find some that dont and what size or model number will work good for now without building on the engine at this point?

Oh and I found a GST that I think is going to work out with 88k miles.

You will need the wastegate if you are running over 20 PSI so thats pretty much a 18g or a 20g turbo.

it all depends on how big you go, and how Fast you WANT to go... if you just upgrade to a 16g you don't have to go crazy with the mods, but like me with my 20g, either get NEW, or save money and port your mani, O2 housing, upgrade the fuel system(550+injectors, high flow fuel pump, bigger rail, pressure reg.) exhaust is a must, but I would do that BEFORE you even think about getting a bigger turbo. exhausts cost as must as a turbo does... and if you want fast, go like I did and go turbo back.. 3" its gonna cost between $500 and $1200 depending on brands, but will add around 20-25hp, the intercooler doesn't have to upgraded, but if you want to maximize your turbo output it does. and on the intake.....do that before anything else. first things first IE>intake, headers, exhaust..always, unless you are turbo'd and then its intake, BOV, boost controler, boost gauge, exhaust, turbo timer.

oh, and a lot of the bigger turbos come internally gated, so you don't always need to worry about a new waste gate.

Man, you guys are gonna scare the crap outta him. Like burnt said, it depends on how much you want. There are DSM'ers who have just plopped in a 16g, ported the exhaust mani and o2 housing, and switched to a 1g BOV and ran low 13 sec 1/4. Also, a 16g with those mods on a 2nd gen will be able to make about 260hp crank, More than enough to get you into trouble. Remember, DSM's aren't like honda's...these engines don't need internal mods until you reach the 450hp level. Upgrading the fuel system and engine control are priority. But have fun, and forget about honda's[:'(]

Ok, so I bought a '97 GST. I pulled the engine. Bored .040 over, put in new 2nd G pistons with 1st G rods, had to mill'em down about 38 thousandths for them to fit but it worked out great. New crank and bearings, new head blah blah blah. I put on a T3 turbo with external wastegate. Aluminum pipe with fmic and Dejon tool intake pipe with tial BOV and a SAFC to control the stuttering from not having the BOV piped back into the intake and a few others mods but to save time and my typing skills, you get the pitter. Anyway, I had a question about the wastegate lines. I have an adjustable boost controller that splices in with the factory boost line so you can flip a switch and go from the factory boost level to what ever you've set this controller at. I know where to hook this line up on my new WG. This new external WG I have has another line coming off the lower part of it. From what I gather with the very vague directions that came with it, I should run that and another line coming from the intake, before the throttle plate, back to the second (or lower) nipple on my factory boost controller........................................ Is this correct?
