Breaking in a motor is the most critical part of building an engine for the road or for the street. Regardless of power goals high or low the same process should be used.

The website listed below this article shows a detailed description how to break in a 4 stroke motor. In order to be able to follow this correctly and adapt it to your needs and your situation you need to understand the dynamics of the task at hand.

For example the article states that you must put a load on the engine and take it from a low rpm all the way to the redline, and then let the car decelerate on its own. The thing I noticed that is not 100% clear in this article is that you need a decent load on the engine. Many people think that doing this process in first gear is fine when it does not actually put any kind of load on the engine. This goes against the whole point of this and will decrease the whole effectiveness of the break in procedure. Instead I would recommend that this be done in third gear because of speed restrictions.

Another thing that I believe is often overlooked is when some say, “I’m going to drive to the section of road that I plan to do this break in” and don’t realise that the breaking in starts from the moment you turn the key.

I can understand that most of you will be confused and not fully understand what I am trying to say. After you have read the article it will all make sense.

Also remember to take lots of oil and coolant with you.
