hmmm, i seriously don't know much about these cars, but i don't believe that i've seen a lot of sohc's with turbos. i've heard of quite a few dohc na's with turbos. i'm pretty sure that everything bolts up to sl's and r/t's. you have to get some exhaust stuff, the turbos, plenum, throttle body, and intercooler with piping to do that.

join www.3si.org for sure, i know they'll know more than i do and you'll probably get more of a response.

your not going to find a turbo kit specially made for the 98 base model. If you want a turbo , its gonna be custom done, or your gonna have to get a swap which is too expensive. I wish they sold bolt on kits for our cars. I want my SL to be boosted.

you might be able to use a supercharger on your sohc. it worked on my friends stratus, which i think is essentially an eclise v-6, right? the only thing i would suggest is building up the engine before just stapping on a turbo or a supercharger.

for your sl, i'm pretty sure that you can get
-downpipe
-plenum
-throttle body
-turbos
-intercooler with piping
-turbo lines?

can't you just get all that stuff and be ready to go. i think that's what i've read somewhere

I had a '98 base model. It's not the same engine as the SL or VR-4. I put a cone intake filter on it and a test pipe. Gained about 25 hp. There was a noticable difference. Try it. It's not that expensive.

Yea unfortunately your engine is SOHC or Single over head cam so you aren't getting as much power as the NA DOHC. You have a 10:1 Compression ratio engine so turbo'ing can be risky. I would say do a complete Twin Turbo engine swap( you can do this for less than 3Grand). I am saving up right now to do mine and it is going to be crazy. Yes the TT engine is the same engine just with DOHC, Better Heads, and 8:1 Compression ratio pistons. It will fit right in. Also......

Sorry but the truth is you maybe got 15hp at the engine but only about 6 or so at the road and that is what really matters

If memory serves me correctly...the SOHC is 8.5:1 compression...

Pretty close. The SOHC for 1998 is 8.9:1 which will enable you to run quite a bit of boost but the SOHC will limit you tuning abilities. It is up to you. It really doesn't matter what compression ratio your engine is stock. Just get some lower compression pistons and you are ready to run boost. The problem you run into is that there is not "turbo kit" so you need to know what you are looking for and shop around for the individual parts which takes alot of time but it usually cheaper than just getting a TT engine. However going with the swap means that everything is pretty much all in one package and will save time but it will usually cost a little bit more money.

Oh go HERE for more detailed specs on our cars. Peace!
