The
Mitsubishi Eclipse has been produced as a two-door four-seat sports coupe since 1990 until 2006, with one of the most popular variants being the Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. The Spyder was introduced in 1995 and has been offered as a convertible, yet continues to be sold for the low prices associated with the Eclipse. When the Spyder was added to the lineup in 1995 as a convertible it was met with widespread acceptance.
Trim levels for the first year of the Spyder were the Eclipse base model, the Eclipse RS, the Eclipse GS, and the Eclipse GS Spyder which was a front wheel drive vehicle and provided 141 horsepower from a 16 valve single overhead cam Mitsubishi engine. There was also an Eclipse GS-T, the Eclipse GSX, and the Eclipse GS-T Spyder, which was a convertible with front wheel drive. This model provided the buyer 210 horsepower from a turbocharged 2.0 liter 16 valve dual overhead cam Mitsubishi engine. By the fourth generation the GS Spyder had a 2.4 liter 162 horsepower engine and the GT Spyder offered 260 horsepower with a 3.8-liter engine.
The Eclipse GS Spyder had features such as a power antenna, driving lights, cruise control, colored door handles, larger wheels, a spoiler, and lower body cladding all of which were offered with this model as well as the Eclipse GS. The GS-T Spyder had all of the same features, but also had the larger wheels and a turbocharged engine that matched the sporty look. Newer Spyder models feature leather interior, 17-inch alloy wheels, and upgraded audio systems.
