The Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact car built by the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation starting in 1973. The Lancer has been sold under various names such as the Colt Lancer, the Chrysler Valiant Lancer, Chrysler Lancer, as well as the Hindustan Lancer and was the inspiration for many other models and makes of cars.
When the Lancer first rolled off the assembly lines in 1973 it proved to be quite successful. The Lancer fulfilled the need of a compact car, since Mitsubishi was better known for its Galant, which was a midsized car at the time. Those that liked the idea of a Galant but didn't need all the space were drawn to the Lancer. Twelve models of the Lancer would be released ranging from a 1200 cm basic sedan to a more powerful 1600 GSR model. In 1989 the Lancer EX was offered, sporting a turbocharged engine. The new model also had a more angular body look than previous models.
In 2000 the Galant had been through eight generations and the new model was better than ever. In 2000 there were both sedan and station wagon forms. Facelifts were also done for the 2004-2006 models. In 2004 the front end was changed to make it look more corporate. In 2005 the grille was changed to make room for more fins. In 2006 the facia was changed from a bridged style to one with an open vent. Starting in 2004 the Lancer was often equipped with the 4G69 engine and included a better suspension package for better handling. The Galant is offered in both a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
