An attractive compact car, the Mitsubishi Mirage was produced in the years from 1978 though 2004. The Mitsubishi Mirage was also sold as the Mitsubishi Colt and the Lancer in many markets. The Mirage was introduced as a three door front wheel drive hatchback when it first made its appearance and was a respones to the first fuel crisis a few years before its release.
The first Mitsubishi Mirage had a distinctive design with large windows and boasted Mitsubishi's "Supershift" transmission which had four speeds with two modes. A five door model joined the first version in 1979 and this version was known as the Dodge Colt and Plymouth Champ and received the highest ratings for fuel economy the year it was released. A 1600 cc engine also joined the lineup in 1979. Constantly refining the Mirage, Mitsubishi released a four door version of the Mirage called the Lancer Fiore in 1981 and a turbocharged version joined the team in 1982.
By 2004 the Mirage had seen many facelifts and models, in all it was eight generations of this great car. There was a constant stream of three door, four door, two door, and wagon versions some of which made it to the United States some of which did not. Mitsubishi generally equipped the vehciles with a 4 cylinder engine, though there was a V6 available in some years and models, as well. All in all, the Mirage experienced a very good run from 1978 until 2004.
