The Mitsubishi Montero is an SUV that hit the streets in 1982. The Montero is also known as the Mitsubishi Pajero or the Mitsubishi Shogun in other countries. The Montero has been so popular that the name has been incorporated into other models to boost their popularity as well.
There have been several generations of the Montero. The first was produced from 1982 until 1991. This model was available with a two door body on a short wheelbase as well as a four door body on a long wheel base. Engine options included a 2.4 L, a 3.0 L V6, or an intercooled 70 Kw engine. Non-permanent four wheel drive was standard on both models.
The second generation of the Montero was built from 1992 until 2000. The Montero again had two body styles, but this generation was more curvacious and city friendly than the first generation. The second generation model had a 3.0 V6 engine with a 24 valve head. In 1996 the Montero was given a slight facelift and larger engines were introduced as well. This newer version incorporated a 3.5 L V6 with 153 kW as well as Mitsubishi's Super Select four wheel drive system with an electronic transfer shift that could split power between both axles without stopping the car.
The third generation was introduced in 2001 and continues. The third generation of the Montero is considered the most luxuious of all three generations and it's more upscale than the previous models as well. The 3.5 L engine was given gasoline direct injection, increasing power in this model. Starting in 2003 the engine was replaced with a 3.8 L engine with 160 kW. The short wheel base is no longer available in North America since it's main competitors are Toyota's Land Cruiser or the Land Rover Discovery. Sadly, because of slow sales the Mitsubishi Montero will cease being sold in North America in 2007.
