Produced from 1982 until 1990, the Mitsubishi Starion was a three door sports car that featured a turbocharged four cylinder engine, rear wheel drive, and five seats. The Starion was considered the sports car of the time and was commonly sold as the Conquest under the Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth names. The Mitsubishi Starion is considered one of the oringal Japanese turbocharged performance vehicles, though there were turbocharged vehicles before the Starion such as the Saab 99 and the Lancer 2000 Turbo.
The Starion hit the market when sports cars were becoming more and more popular. Mitsubishi intended for the Starion to be competition for the Datsun 280ZX Turbo, Nissan 300ZX, and the Toyota Supra Turbo. Though the Starion was seen as the the beginning of the turbocharged vehicles, it suffered from poor sales numbers throughout its production. No major changes were made to the design during production as it proved to be very durable. The biggest change that was made during is production was the upgrade to the ESI-r which featured an intercooler and five bolt wheels replacing the four bolt wheels it has always had in previous models. In United States the Starion had a 2.6 Litre engine and was available in the LS, ES, ESI, and ESI-R trim packages. The Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth names sold the Tri trim package.
